The Yucatan Peninsula is made up of porous limestone that is riddled with holes like Swiss cheese. Over 1000km (620 miles) of cave passages have been surveyed & mapped with guide lines, and current exploration efforts continue to add to those numbers daily. In the caves closer to the ocean, salt water pushes in to the caves in shallow depths. The further away from the ocean you get, the deeper the salt water passages appear in the caves. There have been sitings of salt as deep as 100m (330 feet)
