Large Hadron Collider Experiments
1:57
The Large Hadron Collider is one of the largest machines in the world. Its purpose is to fire subatomic particles at each other so we can better see how they function. Find out more about this massive machines in Colossal Machines, on Thursdays at 8pm, on National Geographic UK. | National Geographic UK

The LHC is preparing to restart at almost double the collision energy of its previous run. The new energy will allow physicists to check previously untestable theories, and explore new frontiers in particle physics. When the LHC is on, counter-rotating beams of particles will be made to collide at four interaction points 100 metres underground, around which sit the huge detectors ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb. In the video above, engineers and technicians prepare these four detectors to receive the

Giving #LHC collisions a new shape: New result from the ATLAS Experiment measures "isotropy" of collision events! A lot can happen when you slam two protons together at nearly the speed of light. Inside the proton, the strong force acts between quarks and gluons, generating a diverse array of energy flow patterns. When studying the shape of LHC collision events, ATLAS physicists ask: how similar or different is their energy flow? Find out what new techniques ATLAS physicists are using to study e

Scientists at CERN's Large Hadron Collider have succeeded in transforming lead into gold, fulfilling an age-old alchemical dream using modern physics. The ALICE team achieved this by colliding lead nuclei at nearly the speed of light. The resulting electromagnetic fields caused three protons to be ejected from the lead atoms during close encounters, thus creating gold. Between 2015 and 2018, 86 billion gold atoms—about 29 picograms—were produced in this way, at a rate of 89,000 atoms per second.
